The Montecristo No. 5 is a very small corona measuring 102 mm by a 40 ring gauge, wrapped in a very fine Colorado wrapper. The cold draw reveals earthy and woody notes.
The first third begins with a notable bitterness that delays the arrival of more pleasant woody nuances.
In the second third, the cigar becomes slightly more powerful and significantly less bitter, offering intense woody aromas with spicy undertones.
The final third delivers gourmand flavors of dried fruits that lend smoothness, culminating in a finish reminiscent of roasted cocoa.
Though less evolving than in past years, costing it half a ring, this vitola remains enjoyable despite its initial shortcomings.
