Vitola: Hermosos No.1 (Grand Corona) | Size: 48 ring gauge × 167 mm (6⅝″)
The Montecristo Dantés Edición Limitada 2016 is a limited edition Cuban cigar crafted in honor of the legendary Edmond Dantès—protagonist of *The Count of Monte Cristo*. Featuring the classic Hermosos No.1 format, this Grand Corona-sized cigar (6⅝″ × 48) delivers a medium-full to full-bodied experience with a dark, rich wrapper and complex flavor evolution.
Initial cold aromas include fresh leather, cocoa, and a sweet acidity reminiscent of chocolate chip cookie dough and Aperol. Upon lighting, the Dantés opens with deep woodiness, moving into layers of peanut, brown rice, and toasted bread. A standout note in the first third is a sweet peanut butter cream balanced with hints of root beer and cedar.
The second third brings a shift to more acidic and mineral tones—poppy seed muffin, paper, and subtle sugar. Nuts dominate the finish—walnut and peanut—with a return of earthy undertones. The final third is smoother, with Lay’s potato chip saltiness, porky umami, and classic Cuban minerality.
While the flavor profile is dynamic and maturing well, the Dantés can struggle with a tight draw and average smoke output. Construction is solid overall, with an even burn and sturdy ash, though it benefits from being properly humidified or draw-corrected.
Released in February 2017 as part of the 2016 Edición Limitada lineup, the Montecristo Dantés is ideal for aging. It showcases nuanced Cuban craftsmanship and historical homage, but aficionados may prefer to give it more humidor time for optimal flavor balance and draw performance.
