Released in celebration of Montecristo’s 80th anniversary, the Montecristo 80 Aniversario is a limited-edition Cuban cigar that exemplifies the brand’s legacy of craftsmanship and rich flavor. Although originally slated for a 2015 release, this commemorative cigar finally shipped in 2016 in a striking Double Robusto format, known as Maravillas No.2.
Rolled with select Cuban tobaccos and designed to be stronger than the typical Montecristo, this 55-ring gauge beast delivers a long, evolving experience. The initial draw reveals notes of wood, waffle cone, and a subtle floral aroma reminiscent of well-aged Cubans. The first third is smooth and creamy, with layers of earth, acorn, and oatmeal cookie nuances.
As the cigar progresses, the strength intensifies, developing bold flavors of coffee, black pepper, and thick vanilla cream on the retrohale. The sweetness gradually fades, giving way to a more robust and earthy character with a dry, woody finish.
Despite some construction inconsistencies—like touch-ups in the latter thirds and a slightly tight draw—the Montecristo 80 Aniversario remains a memorable smoke. It’s ideally enjoyed after a hearty meal, offering nearly three hours of full-flavored complexity, bold strength, and historic prestige.
With only 30,000 boxes of 20 cigars produced, this release is both a collector’s item and a testament to Montecristo’s enduring legacy in the world of Habanos.
