The Hoyo de Monterrey Palmas Extra is a classic corona measuring 140 mm by a 40 ring gauge, wrapped in a dull but well-finished and fairly smooth Colorado leaf. Its cold draw presents barnyard and dusty notes, accompanied by a resistant draw that sets a slow pace.
The first third offers a pleasant introduction with dry herbal tones, although the reluctant draw delays the arrival of smoke on the palate. This section is light and lacks complexity.
In the second third, the cigar develops more organic flavors, such as moss and bark, yet it lacks body and length in the mouth. The strength rises slightly but remains moderate.
The final third continues a very linear and simple profile, finishing with a touch of bitterness. While enjoyable, the vitola’s overall lack of character results in a half-ring deduction this year.
