The third release in Habanos S.A.’s Añejados series, the Hoyo de Monterrey Hermosos No.4 showcases the depth that comes from five to eight years of aging in Cuba. This light-bodied Corona Extra delivers refined flavors in a subtly box-pressed format, accompanied by a second Añejados band for distinction.
Upon lighting, the cigar opens with spicy cedar and leather, followed by notes of cereal, dark chocolate, hay, and earth. There’s a persistent spiciness on the palate and retrohale that surprises, balanced by a subtle underlying sweetness.
The second third is the standout. A bold mesquite barbecue note emerges, mingling with espresso, cocoa, grass, and a light maple sweetness that elevates the flavor complexity. Construction remains impeccable, with a consistent burn and increasing smoke output. The strength settles at a solid medium.
As the cigar enters its final third, the barbecue tone fades, replaced by more traditional Cuban notes: oak, toast, leather, and almonds. The maple sweetness lingers, though it never fully defines the profile. The strength plateaus, and the excellent construction persists to the nub.
While the Hermosos No.4 Añejados may not reach the complexity of standout Hoyo de Monterrey releases, its impeccable construction and unique flavor moments—particularly the spicy mesquite mid-section—make it a cigar worth trying. It’s a light to medium smoke with a matured character, best appreciated by seasoned smokers with a taste for nuance.
