The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 is a robusto measuring 124 mm by a 50 ring gauge, wrapped in a veiny Colorado wrapper with good fill. The cold draw presents notes of caramel and mild spices, accompanied by a satisfying draw.
The first third opens gently with fresh wood and vegetal aromas. The smoke is abundant yet carries a slight astringency, while the combustion remains steady.
In the second third, sweet flavors like caramel and light cocoa emerge, though the smoke lacks a certain roundness. The combustion begins to falter slightly.
The final third delivers hints of green coffee and cocoa but finishes hot and astringent.
After facing criticism last year, the Epicure No. 2 has only partially regained its former balance. Once recommended for beginners, it now struggles to recapture the smoothness and lightness it was once known for.
