Vitola: Edmundo | Size: 52 ring gauge × 135 mm (5⅜″)
There are cigars that impress with novelty, and then there are those that seduce with heritage and restraint. The H. Upmann Royal Robusto, a La Casa del Habano exclusive released in 2011, belongs unmistakably to the latter. Only 5,000 boxes of 10 were produced, making this a rare expression of a brand that has carried quiet confidence since 1844.
At 135mm in length and a generous 52 ring gauge, this Edmundo-format cigar is wrapped in a velvety, cinnamon-hued capa—slightly toothy, lightly oily, and emanating aromas of cedar, chocolate, and barnyard earth the moment the lid is lifted from the box. The Royal Robusto doesn’t ask for attention; it commands it with elegance.
The first draws reveal a classic H. Upmann profile with added depth: **creamy cedar, espresso, roasted nuts**, and a touch of hay. A soft **vanilla sweetness** rides on the retrohale, interwoven with **white pepper and faint baking spice**. The body builds gently from mild-medium to a solid medium, while the burn—though wavy to start—settles beautifully. The smoke production is lush and consistent.
As the cigar progresses into the second third, complexity grows. The vanilla gives way to **honey and salted caramel**, while darker tones of **earth, dark chocolate, and bitter coffee** round out the core. A subtle **floral note** makes a brief but elegant appearance, while the retrohale retains just enough pepper to keep things lively. The draw remains perfect, and the overall construction is excellent.
The final third intensifies slightly, nudging toward medium-full, yet always retaining balance. **Toasted chocolate, floral hints, cedar, and espresso** return, layered over a creamy finish. The smoke remains cool to the nub, never bitter—proof of careful fermentation and expert rolling.
This is a cigar made not just for now, but for later. While superb straight from the box, the Royal Robusto has the structure and complexity to reward aging. Give it five years, and its already refined character may deepen into something extraordinary.
Whether enjoyed on a terrace at dusk or paired with an aged tawny port after dinner, the H. Upmann Royal Robusto LCDH offers a contemplative, slow-burning experience that honors its name. It is, without exaggeration, one of the standout Cuban cigars of its decade.
