Trinidad

Trinidad is named after the 16th-century town of Santísima Trinidad on Cuba’s south coast—a UNESCO World Heritage site. The marca was created in 1969 at Havana’s famed El Laguito factory and, like Cohiba, existed for decades solely as a diplomatic gift for high-level visitors. Former Habanos executive Adriano Martínez confirmed this origin in Min Ron Nee’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars. The cigars first came to the attention of the wider cigar world in 1995, when guests at a Cigar Aficionado tasting sampled them outside diplomatic circles for the first time. Public release finally followed on 20 November 1998—but only in one size, the elegant Fundadores. In 2003, a black-tie launch in London unveiled three new vitolas—Reyes, Coloniales, and Robusto Extra—accompanied by a refreshed, more contemporary band and box design. The line expanded again in 2009 with the Robustos T, and later with sizes such as Vigía. All Trinidad cigars feature the marque’s signature pigtail cap. Production long remained at El Laguito under manager Avelino Lara (who passed away in 2009), but today the brand is rolled in Pinar del Río, capital of the Vuelta Abajo growing zone. Each vitola is Totalmente a Mano with Tripa Larga, using carefully selected filler and binder tobaccos from Vuelta Abajo to deliver Trinidad’s hallmark medium body and refined aroma. Although Trinidad enjoyed a surge of popularity after its 1998 debut—followed by a contraction in 2012 when several sizes were retired—it retains a loyal following. Now listed by Habanos S.A. in the portfolio’s “Other” (niche) category, the brand is produced in modest quantities and occasionally appears in limited or special releases.
