Sancho Panza

Sancho Panza is a premium Cuban cigar brand first established in 1848, now produced by Habanos S.A., Cuba’s state-owned tobacco company. The brand was named after the beloved rustic squire in Miguel de Cervantes’ classic novel, Don Quixote. It was originally registered by Don Emilio Ohmstedt, who also founded El Rey del Mundo. The factory was located at 48 Angeles Street in Havana. In the 1880s, the brand was purchased by Ramón Allones and later acquired by the Rey Del Mundo Cigar Company in 1940. Following the Cuban nationalization of all cigar companies on September 15, 1960, Sancho Panza’s assets and factory were absorbed into the state’s control. Today, all Sancho Panza cigars are Totalmente a Mano (completely handmade) using Tripa Larga (long filler) tobaccos sourced from the Vuelta Abajo region—renowned for its world-class leaves. The brand is known for its larger formats, including the substantial Belicosos and Sanchos. Its medium-bodied blend often delivers a unique, slightly salty note that appeals to seasoned Havana smokers. Though it was originally a smaller, lesser-known brand that faded in the late 19th century, it was revived in the early 20th century and ultimately returned to prominence under Rey Del Mundo by the 1930s and 1940s, especially in the Spanish market. Habanos S.A. now places Sancho Panza in its “Other” category of portfolio brands, and it occasionally features in the Regional Edition program.
