Por Larrañaga is one of Cuba’s oldest cigar brands, founded in 1834 by Spanish immigrant Ignacio Larrañaga. The name itself means “by Larrañaga.” He opened his first cigar factory in Havana, and by the late 19th century, the brand had gained widespread popularity. In 1920, the company expanded into a larger facility on Carlos Tercero Street in Havana, where it produced enduring vitolas such as Petit Coronas, Montecarlo, Panetelas, and Belicosos Extra.
In 1925, Por Larrañaga made history as the first Cuban factory to introduce mechanized cigar production. However, the innovation met with resistance from the local community, as machines were seen as a threat to the traditional craft of cigar rollers. The backlash was strong enough that the factory was ultimately forced to abandon machine-made cigars.
By 1960, Por Larrañaga had become one of Cuba’s largest producers. Production was moved to the La Corona factory on Avenida 20 de Mayo, but by the 1980s, output and exports began to decline. In 2006, a limited run of Por Larrañaga Lonsdales was released as a Regional Edition for Germany, packaged in 25-count dress boxes and featuring a special Exclusivo Alemania band—highly sought after by collectors and aficionados.
Today, Por Larrañaga cigars are made Totally by Hand, using both Long Filler and Short Filler methods. All cigars include leaf from the Vuelta Abajo region, with Short Filler vitolas also incorporating tobacco from Semi Vuelta. The brand is known for its refined craftsmanship and elegant presentation.
Classified as a Local Brand in the pre-2019 Habanos S.A. system, Por Larrañaga is today considered a historic pre-Revolution label with a loyal following. Its flavor profile is characterized as Mild to Medium, offering balance, smoothness, and accessibility.
