The Piedra family emigrated from Asturias, Spain, to Cuba in the mid-19th century, settling near the town of Santa Clara. In the 1880s, second-generation family member José Lamadrid Piedra developed the brand that bears his name. José L. Piedra enjoyed solid pre-Revolution fame, but production waned after 1959 and ceased entirely in the early 1990s. Revived in 1996 as an affordable, high-value line, it re-entered the market with six hand-made formats; the Petit Cazadores was added later. The Nacionales vitola was discontinued in 2013, leaving six formats in current production.
