Hoyo de Monterrey

Hoyo de Monterrey: Elegance from the Valley of Gold

Founded in 1865 by José Gener, Hoyo de Monterrey traces its roots to a fertile plantation in San Juan y Martínez, marked by the words “Hoyo de Monterrey. José Gener. 1860.” From this legendary valley came a brand defined by elegance, balance, and subtle complexity.

Known for its light strength and aromatic finesse, Hoyo cigars use only the finest leaves from Cuba’s prized Vuelta Abajo region. Each vitola is crafted Totally by Hand with Long Filler, offering a refined experience ideal for those who favor nuance over intensity.

Among its finest are the Epicure No.2, beloved for its creamy draw and floral notes; the grand Double Corona, a long-format masterpiece of layered richness; the compact yet flavorful Petit Robustos, perfect for modern moments; and the Le Hoyo de San Juan, a newer classic from the elegant Le Hoyo series.

Hoyo de Monterrey invites you to explore the lighter side of Cuba—with grace, tradition, and gold beneath the soil.

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the plantation of the same name located in San Juan y Martínez, at the heart of Cuba’s Vuelta Abajo region. One of the most renowned Vegas de Primera, the plantation is marked by the historic inscription at its entrance: “Hoyo de Monterrey. José Gener. 1860.”

José Gener, originally a leaf grower, became the founder of one of the largest cigar factories in Cuba. In 1865, he used the name of his prized plantation to launch the now-legendary Hoyo de Monterrey brand. Cultivating tobacco in this fertile valley throughout the late 19th century, Gener helped define the character and elegance the brand is known for today.

The brand’s mild and aromatic blend, using only tobacco from Vuelta Abajo, makes it an excellent choice for smokers seeking a refined and elegant Habano with light strength and great complexity.

Among the most iconic vitolas are the Double Corona—a benchmark among connoisseurs for its silky richness and layered flavor—and the celebrated Epicure Series with its No.1, No.2, and the Epicure Especial, introduced in 2008. Another standout is the Le Hoyo Series, known for its slimmer and medium ring gauge cigars. This line first appeared on the market in the mid-1970s, with “Le Hoyo” referring to the valley of Monterrey itself—an area famed for its gold-like, fertile soil.

In 2005, Hoyo de Monterrey launched the first Petit Robustos in the Habanos portfolio—a 50-ring gauge cigar in a shorter format, perfect for those seeking full flavor in less time. Today, all Hoyo vitolas are produced in seven different Cuban factories, using the finest tobacco grown in Cuba.

Every Hoyo de Monterrey cigar is crafted Totally by Hand with Long Filler, continuing a tradition of craftsmanship that began over 150 years ago.
